What this course covers

This course establishes a welfare-led, ecosystem-based understanding of bioactive vivariums. It is designed for keepers who want stable, defensible systems that perform over time — not just enclosures that look natural on day one.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

• Explain what “bioactive” means in practice, and recognise common misconceptions.
• Build substrate and drainage foundations that support microbial life.
• Use microfauna appropriately and maintain balance over time.
• Select and manage plants for function, not aesthetics.
• Balance humidity and ventilation to protect welfare and stability.
• Apply lighting fundamentals, including photoperiod as a biological signal.
• Use welfare-led observation and enrichment to reduce stress.
• Maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot systems proportionately.
